The Established Heart
“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.” Hebrews 13:9. This is a command from God through the writer of Hebrews. The apostle Paul tells us in 1Timothy 4:1, “Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.” It is imperative today that Christians have their hearts established with grace. Anything that takes us away from the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, that says we have to add to the work of Calvary to be saved or made complete is against the gospel of grace and grace thinking that Christians need to be established in today. So our starting point needs to be Jesus Christ, Who is grace, and His finished work, which is what grace has done, then act like it is so which is being established in what grace means.
The Word is what physically and spiritually connects us to all of grace. Being born-again gives us the right to become sons of God. The New Birth connects us to the right source. Now the new creation person must continually walk with God. Read the Bible. Do the Bible. Make decisions based upon God’s Word. He must become established, fully persuaded, thoroughly convinced that God’s Word is true and cannot fail such to the fact that he now lives the Word. Joshua 1:8; James 1:22; Romans 12:1-2; Proverbs 4:20-23. Notice the command in verse 23 of Proverbs chapter four. “Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life.” How do we do that? The next four verses tell us. Verse 24, “Put away from you a froward mouth or a mouth that speaks contrary to God’s Word. Proverbs 18:20-21. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Verse 24 of Proverbs 4 goes on to say “Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before thee. Proverbs 4:21. “Let the word of God not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.” Verse 26, “Ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor the left: remove your foot from evil.”
It is not enough to study and meditate the Word. We must be doers of it. James 1:22; Joshua 1:8. Revelation comes one way. Being established in your heart, from spirit to soul to body comes from hearing and doing. No other way. Matthew 7:21-29. Two people. The same circumstances of life. One is successful. The other is unsuccessful. Why? One hears but does not do. The other hears and does, he acts on what he hears. Which one are you?
