Sealed With the Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 1:19-22 "Now he which establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts." The NKJV says “who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”
The word sealed in the Greek is "sphragizo”-and it means to stand with a Signet or private Mark for security or preservation. By implication, to keep secret, to attest. The verse has a definite article-the seal meaning the seal or stamp of approval, the guarantee is the person of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 1:13-14 "In whom you also trusted after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest or guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory."
The word earnest or guarantee in the Greek is the word "arrabon” which means money or pledge or first down payment of the Spirit of our inheritance until the fullness of our redemption is complete.
Ephesians 4:30 "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption."
The word sealed is in the aorist indicative passive tense meaning that you believed, and He sealed you.
2 Timothy 2:19 "Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, the Lord knows them that are His." How? By the Holy Spirit in our hearts. The Holy Spirit himself is the seal.
In Scripture a sealed signifies:
1) Ownership - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. The word Lord-Adonai-master, ruler, owner. One of the implications of communion with the Holy Spirit is responsibility. God takes responsibility for what or who He owns. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of adoption and He who has the Spirit has God's seal that he belongs to the heavenly family.
Romans 8:14-16 "For as many as our lead of the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For you have not received the Spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption: whereby we cry Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”
The sealing of the Holy Spirit is God's mark of ownership of you, which brings you under His protection and covering.
1 John 5:18 "We know that whosoever is born of God sins not; but he that is begotten of God keeps himself, and that wicked one touches him not."
We have immunity from the wicked one and he cannot touch us because we are owned and belong to God the Father. This comes by revelation of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit invested in us God's title to possessing us entirely and forever.
2) To confirm or approve by testimony - John 3: 33-34 "He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives not the Spirit by measure unto him. This speaks of Jesus, but it's also true of us.
John 17:18 in John 20:21 - Jesus-"As the Father has sent me even so send I you."
Let's take the example of a fruit inspector or a manufacturer seal of approval.
The moment we are born again God puts his stamp or testimony of confirmation or approval which is the Holy Spirit without measure.
The measure is none other than Jesus Christ himself.
John 17:4 "I have glorified you on the Earth. I have finished the work which you gave me to do."
John 19:30 "It is finished!"
Colossians 2:10 "We are complete in him…..
Hebrews 10:14 says that we are perfected for ever.
3) Security- Ephesians 4:30 "And grieve not the Holy Spirit whereby you were sealed unto the day of redemption."
Ephesians 1:14 "which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."
Notice the guarantee or earnest meaning that down payment of the Spirit and of our inheritance until the fullness of redemption is complete.
From Kenneth Weust’s meaning of being sealed by the Holy Spirit-" Thus God places the Holy Spirit in us permanently."
James 4:5 "Do you think that the Scripture says in vain, the Spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?" Again from Kenneth Weust’s translation "or, do you think that the Scripture says in an empty manner and to no purpose, the Holy Spirit who has been caused to make His permanent home in us has a passionate desire to control us to the point of envy of any control indwelling sin may have over us?"
Weust goes on to say that this indicates that the great transaction in which God the Son paid for sin, thus satisfying the demand of God's holy law, is finished, that we saints belong to Him as His heritage and that we are eternally secure.
The Holy Spirit is described as the Spirit of promise, namely the Spirit who was announced by promise.
I want to at this point make a distinction between Unconditional Eternal Security versus Conditional Eternal Security.
My position is that our eternal security is conditional. What's the condition? What was the condition to get in? Romans 10:9. What's the condition to stay in? Romans 10:9.
Free will is disputed by Calvinists, but is something God never takes away from us saved or unsaved.
John 7:39 "But this spake He of the Spirit which they that believe on Him should receive, for the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." Galatians 3:14 "that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." One way in – believe on Jesus. One way out – disbelieve on Jesus.
4) The seal indicates authority of inheritance- Ephesians 1:14 the earnest or guarantee of our inheritance.
The bestowal of the Holy Spirit is God's down payment to newly saved believers guaranteeing the full delivery of all parts of salvation given.
All that Jesus is, all that Jesus has, all He can do is inherited and authorized by the Holy Spirit. An inheritor is a possessor is an heir.
The only thing not inherited at this present time is a glorified body, but Romans 8:11 and the 1 Thessalonians 5:23 tell us that even these bodies are being affected by the glory that is in our spirits.
The final glorification of the body will come at Jesus second coming whether we are alive or dead.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 "We which are alive shall be changed……”
1 Corinthians 15:51-57, "in the twinkling of an eye corruptible will put on incorruption and mortality will put on immortality."
2 Corinthians 5:5 "Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God (talking about a resurrected new body) who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee or earnest of the Spirit."
Christ is with us spiritually, but there will come a time when we will see Him face-to-face and we will be like Him.
1 John 3:2.-Until then we are being changed from glory to glory even by the spirit of God.
2 Corinthians 3:18 "But we all, with open face beholding as in the mirror the glory of the Lord are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, even by the Spirit of the Lord."
