The Healing Annointing
2Corinthians 1:21 “Now he which establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God.” Notice this verse says “has anointed”, past tense. Today, there is much teaching about the anointing of the Spirit of God. People teach that you need an unction to function or when called upon to do the works of Jesus like pray for deaf ears or get people filled with the Spirit or pray or evangelize, we often hear people say “that’s not my anointing.” Preachers even teach to stay in your anointing and not get over into things that you are not anointed to do. I am saying this first and foremost - the anointing upon every born-again believer is the Jesus anointing and you as a born-again, Spirit baptized believer are anointed to do whatever Jesus did. John 14:12.
We often hear people advertise their ministry or teach in books or on tapes about the healing anointing, but there is nothing in the New Testament that teaches any such thing. The only other reference to the anointing, upon a believer is 1 John 2:20, 27 “But you have an unction from the Holy One, and you know all things. But the anointing which you have received of him abides in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in him.”
When did that anointing occur? The answer is at the new birth. When was Jesus’ anointing? He was born the anointed one, but his anointing for service came in Matthew 3:13-17 when he was baptized in the River Jordan and the Spirit came upon.
This was Jesus’ Spirit baptism and from this point on, there is no indication that that anointing ever left Him or lifted or was stronger at times than others. As a matter of fact, in Mark 5:25, the woman with the issue of blood, is the only place where Jesus or anybody was said to feel something. Jesus wasn’t even exercising any faith toward the woman when she got healed. One minister said this: “people just think that if they get under the spout where the glory comes out then they will be healed.” I say that’s exactly the way it works. That’s what happened at the pool Bethesda. That’s what happened when people touched Jesus’ garment. Matthew 14:36 “As many as touched his garment were made whole.” Just get this understanding - The anointing in both old and New Testaments is an appointment. With that appointment comes the grace to accomplish what you are appointed to do. Power or ability comes by the Spirit baptism.
Luke 5:17 “And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.” Why was the power of the Lord present to heal them? The reason is because Jesus, the anointed one was there. He was teaching the word. Notice it does not say that only that man got healed and others did not. It does not say that Jesus was anymore anointed on this day than any other day. It simply says that the power of the Lord was present to heal them. It was present because Jesus was there and he was teaching the word. The anointing is upon the word. 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reprove, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” The word “inspired” means “God breathed”. I can give you many instances when I was preaching the word of God and as the word of God was preached people were being healed.
John 3:34 “For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God for God does not give the spirit by measure unto him.” In the King James version of the Bible “unto him” is in italics, which means it’s not in the original text. John 20:21 and John 17:23 both say that “As the Father has sent me so send I you.” Jesus has given us His glory. We are one with the Father as He is one of the Father.. John 14: 12 tells us that we will do the same works that Jesus did and greater works than these shall we do because He has gone to the Father.
In Mark 5:25 when the woman with the issue of blood touched the hem of Jesus’ garment, the Bible says that virtue or power or the anointing or the life of the Spirit went out of Jesus into that woman. The word for virtue or power is the word “dunamis” in the Greek.
Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit comes upon.” The word for power is the same word used in Mark 5:25 as virtue which is “dunamis”. So what went out of Jesus and into that woman and healed her body is the same thing or anointing or person and power of the Holy Spirit that came into you when you were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Notice it does not say part of the “dunamis”. It just says “dunamis” which means God’s ability.
There is nothing in the New Testament that talks about a healing anointing or the anointing lifting or falling or increasing or decreasing. When preachers say I feel the anointing lifting, that’s preacher talk for I am tired it’s time to go home. You may as well teach “if it be thy will”. The power or anointing of God is received when a person is baptized with the Holy Spirit and there is nothing that says that it lessens or leaves or needs to be increased. The only reference to the Holy Spirit falling in the New Testament is the baptism with the Holy Spirit. People say “we need to get the power working or pastor, how come the power is not working?” I don’t know, you tell me. Why aren’t you working the power?
Ephesians 3:20 “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us.”
So what is the healing anointing?
What is the deliverance anointing?
What is the gifts of the Spirit anointing?
What we really need to ask is ”what is the Son of God anointing?
It is Acts1:8 - the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Jesus never talked about giftings or anointing. Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 did not contradict Jesus. Paul is teaching in 1 Corinthians 12 how the Holy Spirit manifests Himself through a born-again, Spirit baptized believer.
I know there are people that say they had a visitation from Jesus or some Angel and that He laid his hands on them and gave them a healing anointing. That’s between them and God. I’m not disputing that. You just cannot find that in the Bible, in particular the New Testament. Nor is it necessary to get people healed. And let me say there is nothing that says I lay my hands on you and you get my anointing. Or if you lay on someone’s grave that you get the dead persons anointing. Paul said in Romans 1:11 that he wanted to impart some spiritual gift. What he meant was that the people would benefit from him and what God had put in him as he came and ministered unto them. In 1 Timothy 4:14 Paul told Timothy to neglect not the gift that was in him through prophecy and the laying on of hands. Any gifting that anyone has comes from God. No person or prophet or apostle can give you anything. All they can do is confirm what God has put in you. You’re anointing comes from being born-again and baptized in the Holy Spirit. There are times when our physical senses are heightened and we may feel the anointing, but that doesn’t mean we are any more anointed because we feel it. Do we walk by faith or do we walk by sight? 2 Corinthians 5:7.
People say “Yeah, but I felt the power in that service and God just dropped down that anointing. “ No, He had mercy on you and slapped you upside the head or woke you up to what was already in you and upon you. We can stir up that anointing and I’m saying we need to stir up the power of God by praying in other tongues and get out and use it. 2 Timothy 1: 6 “stir up the gift of God which is in you.” Ephesians 5:18 “Be filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual utterances…” God the Father never intended for you to run from meeting to meeting to get where the “man of God” is so they can get in the river or wave or whatever when they should be giving out those rivers that are already in them. John 7:37-39.
In 1Samuel 16:13, Samuel anointed David with the horn of oil and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. Acts15:16-17 speaks about the rebuilding of the tabernacle of David, which refers to the building of the church. James quotes this Old Testament prophecy from Amos 9:11-12 about the salvation of the Gentiles. The point is that, like 1 Samuel 16:13, David, the Spirit came upon him from that day forward. For the church today, the anointing abides, stays with us, for us to use at will, to bring the life, to heal, to deliver, whatever is needed to demonstrate the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ and set people free.
