The Carnal Mind

The Bible tells us in Romans 8:6-7, “Now the mind of the flesh (which is sense reason without the Holy Spirit) is death – death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter. But the mind of the (Holy) Spirit is life and (soul) peace (both now and forever). (That is) because the mind of the flesh (with its carnal thoughts and purposes) is hostile to God, for it does not submit itself to God’s Law; indeed it cannot.” (Amplified). The supernatural realm is not understood by the carnal mind. The logic of the Holy Spirit and his way of doing things is not according to the carnal way of thinking or reasoning. Isaiah 55:9 tells of His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Here He is speaking to unsaved Jewish People under the Old Covenant. But through the New Birth God has revealed His thoughts and ways unto us because we now have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:10, 16.
Through deductive reasoning and human philosophy today, many in the Christian church have taken one of two religious views: 1) That miracles and all the gifts of the Holy Spirit ended with the death of the apostles. 1 Corinthians 13:8-12 is often used to say that “when that which is perfect is come (which they say is the Bible), then that which is in part (tongues or the gifts) will be done away.” Clearly reading through this portion of scripture the “that which is perfect” is Jesus or His coming because “then we will see him face to face.” Ephesians 4:11-13 clearly tells us that the ministry of the apostles and prophets will continue until we all come to the unity of the faith, knowledge of the Son of God, and reach the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. That knowledge is not knowledge about the Son of God but the same knowledge possessed by Jesus himself. The measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ is experiential and demonstrative. 2) The second religious view is that gifts and miracles never occurred because it is not possible that miracles can occur. Yeah, and all of Pharoah’s army, horses and all drowned in four inches of water!
I Matthew 13:58 Jesus could only do a few miracles because of their unbelief. The carnal mind, infused with biblical terminology is a natural enemy to the supernatural. It prevented the people from even coming to or receiving Jesus. 1 Corinthians 2:14 says “the carnal or natural mind receives not the things of the Spirit of God because it is spiritually discerned.” Romans 8:5-9 says “For they that are in the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
The greatest need in the body of Christ today is to renew our minds, and to think like Jesus thinks. We have the mind of Christ on the inside, in our spirit. That spiritual mind is to dominate our thinking process by being renewed to God’s Word. That mind is the mind of Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One. When are thinking is right and in line with God’s Word then our believing will be right and then our speaking and acting will be right. Then we will walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh or with the fleshly or carnal mind.
