Harvest Time

I love the summertime. Summer is the time when people get out of their homes after a long winter, and enjoy the outdoors with their families attending festivals, parades and many other outdoor events and recreations. To me summer means one thing – harvest!
Harvest, as we all know, is the time when the crops are ripe. For farmers it is a time of great joy to bring the first fruits of their labor. Spiritually speaking, the above is true for us Christians also. Jesus said this in Matthew 9:37-38. “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send laborers into His harvest.” In essence, Jesus is telling us that the harvest (people ripe for the kingdom of God) is full. There are many people whose hearts are ready and prepared to receive the Word of God, the power of the Spirit, the love of God , etc., but the laborers are few. There are not enough people demonstrating Jesus Christ to that harvest of people.
Christians need to understand that the Holy Spirit has prepared the harvest. Jesus said in Matthew 9:38 that it is “His” harvest. What is God the Father really concerned with? What is the fruit that Jesus is talking about in John 15:1-7 when he is talking about bearing fruit? Some have taught that Jesus is talking about prayers. Others have said he is talking about the fruit of the Spirit. He is talking about prayer fruit, the prayer He told us to pray in Matthew 9:38 to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into the field. Abiding in Jesus is being one with Him and focused on why Jesus came in the first place (which is win souls and make disciples) and to accomplish that in the power of the Holy Spirit the way He did it.
There is a reality that we all need to come to and it is this: if we are not a missionary (a sent one) then we are a mission field and we are yielded either to Jesus or ourselves, one or the other. There is no in between. Let’s determine on purpose to bear the fruit that God intended us to bear, and that is making disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
